Co. Wexford 12-15 May 2014

14 MAY 2014

In the morning the group enjoyed more beautiful scenery and pretty villages, en-route to the town of Enniscorthy.  There, a visit to the National 1798 Rebellion Centre provided a vividly re-told account of the events of the rebellion in 1798.  A contrasting scene was found in the peaceful gardens of the next stop – Huntington Castle - where the usual coffee and scones was enjoyed.  A guided tour of the castle revealed a wealth of fascinating artefacts and intriguing stories of former occupants.

The next stop was at Altamont Gardens which contains an extensive collection of around 1500 different trees and shrubs as well as hundreds of herbaceous perennials and bulbs.

A magnificent peacock welcomed the group to the beautiful gardens containing a lake surrounded by colourful moisture-loving plants.

Other creatures simply ignored the visitors.

The final visit of the day was to Borris House where we had (yes, you guessed it!) a coffee break followed by a guided tour of the house by the owner Morgan Kavanagh.

Set in magnificent grounds, this is one of the few Irish estates that can trace its history back to the Royal families of ancient Ireland.  The current owner is a descendant of the MacMurrough Kavanagh dynasty, former Celtic Kings of Leinster.
